More Graces of Catholic Tradition

Elizabeth Siddal, Lady Affixing Pennant to a Knight's Spear, watercolor, 1861.

The Church provides so many ways for us to fortify ourselves for the combats of life. Two that deserve more attention relate to the vocation of marriage.

David Kleinsmith has lovely pictures of a Solemn Betrothal. Taken several years ago, they were my first introduction to this ceremony.

Athanasius explains the Churching of Women after childbirth and includes pictures of his wife and new baby.

I'm sad that I didn't get to experience either of these wonderful ceremonies in my marriage, but I'm looking forward to them for my children.

Anthony and I had a betrothal ceremony. It was beautiful, and we appreciated that it gave more significance to our engagement. In this world of several-year-long engagements where the couples who have contracted them often have no intention of marriage, we felt like it showed people that we were serious. The ceremony was lovely. We had it after Mass on the Feast of the Assumption in 2007. Our priest had never done one before but he liked the idea and had no problem performing it.
