A Savory Question with a Hint of Romance

"Can I love my broth overnight?"  dear daughter Emma asked me in a text message this evening after she put Grandma to bed.  Emma had a pot of bones simmering on the stove.

"Oh, yes!" I thought to myself.  "Love your broth overnight and every day!  As long as it's grass fed bone broth, my dear!"

Then her question sparked a memory in my crazy head, and I had to go hunt down the old novelty song, Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?

Scary, huh?

But I didn't tell Emma all that.  I just texted back a laughing Emoji.

"Shut up," she said, which made me laugh harder.  She had realized her mistake--that she had typed "love" instead of "leave".  That doubled my fun.

Seriously, though, I don't know how to cook anymore without homemade bone broth.  Give me some  good long-simmered bone broth and some Red Boat fish sauce and some Coconut Aminos, and dang, I can make anything taste good.

My dad got hospitalized on Sunday, and on Monday when I was visiting him, I asked him what he had for lunch.  He said he had some chicken and some carrots and some rice.  Then he looked at me with a puzzled expression and said, "That chicken didn't have any flavor.  It didn't taste like yours."

And I just grinned like unto a Cheshire cat.

Haha to both stories.

We love our broth, too. In fact, we love it so much that today when I started making butternut squash soup and then relised that I had NO chicken broth in the freezer, I started another meal entirely. The soup wouldn't have been any good. So tomorrow I'm cooking a chicken. We had a deer this year as well as a quarter of a cow, and I have been making wonderful broths using half and half beef/venison.

Red Boat fish sauce is ahhmazing!

I've recently started using an electric pressure cooker for (among other things) making stocks and broths, and have never had better results! the other night I was geeking out to my husband about my freezer full of chicken and turkey stock. It's the little things sometimes, isn't it!

Emily, I know that awful, sinking feeling, when you discover there's no more broth. Lol.

How wonderful that you got a deer! On your place? Ooooh! Love the sound of that half beef, half venison broth!

Hey, Elizabeth! Good to hear from you. Did you get an Insta Pot? I keep wavering about getting one. I have two stovetop pressure cookers, a six and a four quart. They do make awesome broth with incredible gelatin. But I sure can't leave them and run to the store like I could if I had an electric one.

I hope dear hubby was suitably impressed with your stockpile of broths. I sure am! Yes, it definitely is the little things.

Sadly, our place is just a big field. We took what we could get and we love the house, but that land doesn't have much character. :( Don't get me wrong, I am so glad we are here, but no hunting can take place on our land. A friend generously shares his forest, which is teeming with deer. Anthony grabbed one for him, too. We butchered it ourselves! It was really neat. I hope to do it again this fall, maybe twice!
