The Blue Bowl

I had intended to post this yesterday. I am trying to re-focus on my domestic role, and I found the thoughts in this poem, "The Blue Bowl" so beautifully expressed what I want to do. This morning I read Emily G's post on the husband/wife relationship, and I was reminded of it. It's funny how often other bloggers are thinking about the same things.

The Blue Bowl

By Blanche Bane Kuder

All day I did the little things,

The little things that do not show;

I brought the kindling for the fire,

I set the candles in a row,

I filled a bowl with marigolds--

The shallow bowl you love the best--

And made the house a pleasant place

Where weariness may take its rest.

The hours sped on, my eager feet

Could not keep pace with my desire.

So much to do, so little time!

I could not let my body tire;

Yet, when the coming of the night

Blotted the garden from my sight,

And on the narrow, graveled walks

Between the guarding flower stalks

I heard your step; I was not through

With services I meant for you.

You came into the quiet room

That glowed enchanted with the bloom

Of yellow flame. I saw your face,

Illumined by the firelit space,

Slowly grow still and comforted--

"It's good to be at home," you said.

What a lovely poem! It pretty much describes how my day is going today. House to dust and vacuum, bread to make, diapers to wash, clutter to pick up....and here I am wasting time. :)

I'm glad you like the poem, Emily! You know that she is doing all the mundane things too, but the wonderful part is that she also talks about arranging candles and flowers, creating beauty in the home.
