Julie and Julia: Just a Little Spicy

Our plans to go see the movie, Julie and Julia, with our cooking class did not work out, as Herb and I were in Birmingham visiting my sister and brother-in-law. They were just as interested in seeing the movie as I, so we all went together.

We loved the movie, but we loved it despite some overly sexualized scenes. Having read My Life In France and knowing the main subject matter was cooking, I was not expecting this. The scenes were uncomfortable enough for me that I was exceedingly grateful that I was not watching it with my three cooking class teenagers. They would have been embarrassed, and so would I. This movie is rated PG-13. Perhaps that should have clued me in, but I have never found the ratings system particularly helpful.

On the other hand, the humor was done so well that I laughed out loud on several occasions. Meryl Streep played Julia Child fabulously, and I appreciated the effort that went into choosing an actor who resembled her husband, Paul.

Near the end of the movie, Julie finds out that Julia Child does not like her. She doesn't know why, but she wonders aloud if it is because of her use of "the F word" in her blog about cooking her way through Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It would not surprise me. Bad language and bedroom scenes are better kept private.

Having said that, I would still recommend the movie for adults. I would watch it again.

Glad for the good review, Wendy. I want to go see it with Kayleigh. She's wild about cooking too and I've read Julia Child's book. :-)

Fun! When does Kayleigh get back from Europe?
