Lately at restaurants where I have to leave my name with a seater or server, I've been trying to remember to use, "Mrs. Haught" instead of "Wendy". I don't know why it never occurred to me before now. I am proud to be Mrs. Haught, and it certainly seems more appropriate to be identified that way than by being called by my first name by someone I do not know.
The funny thing is, it always takes the restaurant employee by surprise. They usually look startled and have to ask me to repeat myself. Their awkwardness makes me feel awkward too, causing me to lose my nerve and resort to "Wendy" instead of repeating "Mrs. Haught". Then I am disappointed in myself for being such a wimp.
